SEASON 1 : CHAPTER EIGHT: “SEVEN MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT”

NBC Press Release
Air Date: November 13th, 2006 7/8c

FORCES GATHER TO THREATEN VARIOUS "HEROES" -- Back in India to mourn the passing of his father, Suresh encounters mysterious dreams of the past that force him to question what path to take next. Continuing their journey to New York, Hiro and Ando stop at a diner and meet someone interesting. In crisis, Niki comes to a personal understanding. Determined to see one of Isaac’s paintings that Simone recently sold, Peter asks Nathan for help in finding a key to the future. Intent on getting back to her normal life, Claire focuses on Homecoming preparations, unaware of what's to come. Meanwhile, H.R.G. and a surprising associate focus their attentions on another "hero."

Re-cap of Episode Chapter Eight: “Seven Minutes To Midnight”

Mohinder returns home to participate at his father’s funeral, which is held in Kanyakumari, India, the burial ground of Gandhi. Chandra Suresh’s ashes are ceremoniously cast into the ocean.

Isaac awakens in an undisclosed location but is greeted by Eden McCain. She tells him that she is a “facilitator” and that she can help him paint the future without the use of drugs. She assures him that she wants to stop the explosion in New York as much as he does.

At the “Burnt Toast Café” in Midland, Texas Hiro and Ando meet Charlie, a waitress that has a photographic memory. Sylar, who moves his coffee cup by thought, is also in the café.

Mohinder meets up with Mira, an old girlfriend who offers him a position at the company that she works for that does genetic research. Mohinder tells her that he will think about it.

Back at the Burnt Toast Café Hiro and Charlie begin a special friendship, which is portrayed through an unusual filming technique. While a musical score plays the pair converse silently.

(Note: What we interpretted as a filming technique was actually an audio failure on the local network. We have since watched the episode with the entire dialogue.)

Theodore Sprague tells Matt and Audrey that he was not allowed to attend his wife’s funeral and that he probably gave her cancer. Ted becomes upset and the cup of water on the table begins to boil as he becomes angrier. Matt tells Ted about his own ability and the two men show each other the two lines imprinted (or cut) into their necks.

In a dream, Mohinder views himself arguing with his father and then eavesdrops on a discussion between his parents. A young boy, who can see Mohinder enters into the dream.

Ted explains to Matt and Audrey how he blacked out in Kansas and woke up in Tempe, Arizona with this strange ability. He tells Matt that a Haitian student was in the bar when he blacked out.
At the Primatech Paper Company in Odessa, Texas Mr. Bennet enters a secure back room via key card and meets with Isaac. Bennet tells Isaac that his ability is a blessing and that he needs Isaac’s help.

Back at the café Charlie is killed by Sylar who cuts her skull off.

Mohinder is told by his mother that he had an older sister that died at the age of five when he was only two years old and that he was never told about her for fear of comparisons. She also tells him that she was “special.” (We assume this means she had a Heroes ability.)

Bennet tells Isaac that Sylar is killing people with abilities one by one and that his daughter Claire is next in line. He asks Isaac to shoot heroin and finish the painting to help save Claire’s life. Isaac refuses. Bennet also tells Isaac that a group of people are fighting to stop Sylar and that Claire was the child of parents who he failed to help 14 years earlier.

In another dream sequence Mohinder chases the same little boy through his father’s house and out a door only to find himself in an alley in Ney York City. A taxi is parked in the alley and as Mohinder draws closer he sees that his father is being beaten inside the cab. He watches his father die and then sees the watch worn by Sylar as it stops at seven minutes to midnight.

Bennet convinces Eden to “persuade” Isaac to finish the painting and after whispering into his ear Isaac agrees.

Hiro tells Ando that he is going to stop time and try and prevent Charlie’s murder. He tells Ando that he will try and convince Charlie not to go to work on the day of her death. Hiro tells Ando to count to five and he will return but when Ando is done counting Hiro is nowhere to be found.

Mohinder opens his father’s desk and finds folder labeled Iyer Sanjog which contains the picture of the little boy who has been inside his dreams. There are articles concerning dreams and we come to realize that the little boy is also a hero.

In the closing scene we see Isaac painting with eyes of white while Eden looks on, Claire finishes working on her homecoming banner and Ando waits nervously for Hiro’s return.

A photo of Charlie in a black dress with white polka dots under a birthday sign now contains the image of Hiro standing next to her with a very frightened look on his face.

2) An article with the headline, “Sleep Research Reveals New Areas in the Brain.”
3) Images of skulls that looked to be Aztec or Mayan in nature.

4) Communicates with Hiro and Ando in fluent Japanese only a short time after reading a book on the language.
5) Communicates in a strange silent method with Hiro.

The Symbol

The symbol appears to be a shadow (or an eclipse) of the human DNA helix. The intersecting horizontal lines seem to be markers where the DNA has mutated. This is possibly the super-genome or a “new” or “mutated” protein that identifies the Heroes. It can be found in too many locations (see below) to be a mere coincidence. Is it a calling card to those with special powers? And will they rally around it?

Episode 8
1) Found on the computer monitor in Chandra Suresh’s office.
2) Found on the painting of Jessica.

The Mark (The Partial Symbol?)

Episode 8
1) Found on Theodore Sprague’s neck.
2) Found on Matt Parkman’s neck.

Brains:

There has been some discussion concerning mutated and/or manipulated DNA as the reason behind our Heroes powers. But why would someone go through the trouble of sawing the top of someone’s head off and scraping out the brains if it wasn’t important. I can’t think of a psychological reason why this might be done but for research purposes it makes sense. Einstein had his brain removed and studied after his death. Perhaps the powers we are seeing are not genetic manipulations at all but rather from evolution and the power of the brain. Why then the double helix symbol? Mohinder Suresh began the series with the question, “"People only use 10% of their brains, what if they used more?” Could this then be the real reason behind their powers? Have our Heroes somehow found a way to tap into additional brainpower? And, is Sylar being controlled by Mr. Bennett (HRG)? And the question that I keep asking myself, “What is Sylar’s power?” Could he assimilate others abilities?

Episode 8
1) It is assumed that Charlie’s brains were removed from her skull when Sylar cut off the top of her skull in the back room of the Burnt Toast Café.

Discrepancy

Episode 8
1) The screen title shows the restaurant that Charlie works in is named, “Burnt Toast Diner” but the sign on the window and the menus read, “Burnt Toast Café.”

Love your recaps You always catch things that I miss.

1 thing though, I cannot find any instances in this episode where Hiro stops time, nor this silent conversation! Did you mean the duologue at around 12:42? I don't think he exactly stops time then though.

Overall, great episode :) thanks for the recap.

The Alternative said...

There is a portion of a conversation between Hiro and Charlie where they talk at the counter in the diner but we can hear none of their speech. This happens just after they discuss the disco and when she calls him “sweet.” The voices are muted but music was audible, glasses were clinking and the cook says “order is up” but none of their conversation could be heard. We considered this a film/plot device that showed Charlie and Hiro becoming friends. During this conversation Hiro makes his “stopping time” face. We presume that he stops time at this point but are unsure why.

Hey hey, I am now a fan of your blog recaps as much as the show itself! :)

The "muted conversation" you mentioned wasn't muted at all in the version I watched (off the net)...

They were just having a shy banter, with Charlie telling Hiro he's sweet, and he replied "but that's not in the book"...

Then Hiro made that "stop time face" simply because Charlie told him "I like the way your cheeks wobble when you concentrate" (no kidding!)...

Don't see anything mysterious at this point, but if Hiro were to return to this moment in time, this could be a natural point of return, so to speak... :)

Keep up the good job!

As Ando is waiting for Hiro to return... In the background an officer is talking to 2 workers. There is noone else. The cleaner walks out the door.

Cut to Ando standing up, just as the cleaner walks past (showing that not much time has passed) but now TWO officers leave after talking to the workers?

Continuity problem? Or did something change in the timeline? Or am i talking shit?

The Alternative said...

Edric--->

Thanks for your reply. Because we could still hear background noise and music we assumed this was a plot device. We'll have to watch again via web or sci-fi channel on Friday night.

The Alternative said...

dazzer-->

I don't believe it was a continuity problem... they did not show the inside of the back room much so there could have been a lot of cops in the room, coming and going.

Fwoar! You paused the episodes to read all the text on the folders! THat's dedication! *bows down in awe*

I second edric's comment:
"Hey hey, I am now a fan of your blog recaps as much as the show itself! :)"

Regarding the symbol:
The human double helix is a twisted ladder of the nucleic acids of DNA, you know - : adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C), and guanine (G).

A bonds with T, C bonds with G to each make one side of the ladder "rung".

It's not possible to stick things to the outside of the helix - there are no chemical bonds there.

However, the symbol looks to be a "broken off" section of the ladder - only half the ladder, with unbonded nucliec acids sticking out at various angles.

I think this is seen (I'm not a biologist) when DNA replicates.

Regarding the silent conversation, I did't see that either. (I got mine off the net too).

A few more things:
I can't be fully sure, but I belive that dosimeters don't turn back to black if they turn red - they stay red, cause they indicate your accmulated dosage, not the radiation at that point.

But during the argument between Matt and Audrey, we see Matt's dosimeter become black.

I don't think this is intentional, just a boo-boo on the part of the props people.

"Somnambulist’s Song"

A "Somnambulist" is someone who walks about in their sleep.

And my guess about the parallel markings on the necks of some of the Heroes is that they are microchips of some sort - they look to be about the right size - but that's just a wild guess cause they're pretty black to be scars.

I'm guessing Eden has the 2nd symbol on her neck too, but I haven't managed to catch a glimpse of it.

Issac probably doesn't have one yet, since according to HRG, they "we will help you use your abilities without this, but right now... there just isn't time."

Hello all, I just wanted to say that AFTER i watch the show, THEN check the NBC.com site for the graphic novel (and extras....BOOM, I come HERE immediately and I really appreciate all the work you put into this site. It is very informative and makes me want to read more and more.
Excellent links also by the way.

Oh, and to respond to the comments already, I don't remember this "silent" conversation either. All I could think about were how nice Charlie's "Big round eyes" were, haha forgive me.
Speaking of which, Mohinder's ex-gf, Mira, WOW, I believe I have found my future ex-wife, hahahaha.
Peace out folks.

Thanks for all the props they are appreciated. Come back often and leave your comments. This community has been laods of fun for me. I believe that we may have had audio difficulties here in the midwest during the episode which we picked up as a silent conversation. Thanks for pointing this out and filling us in on what was really said.

Starseeker...
Yes, I did pause to read folders and notebook pages. As for the symbol, its importance will probably become more evident later on.

As for the mark (2nd symbol) so far the only thing that Matt and Ted have in common is that they were abducted by HRG and "read" by the Haitian. We're not sure what the mark is though.

KevnlyB...
I have to agree Charlie and Mira are both quite nice looking....

Do you tape it and watch a few times to get all the details, or do you sit there with a pen and paper to get it all down the first time?

I'm in Australia, so when it screens (Tuesday nights?) in the
States, it's already Wednesday night here, and by the time I download it, it's THURSDAY.

*sniff* It's just not fair! The only consolation is that by the time I actually *do* watch it, your site has been updated with the next cool recap.

A big fan. =)

I use my DVR to record the episode in HD then download it to my laptop via TiVo. I can then watch it and pause whenever I need to look at something in detail. I usually watch twice on Monday nights then write my re-cap. I upload to the blog sometime on Tuesday and then make any additions or changes during the week (if I find something new or made a mistake.) I've been using this same formula for my Lost blog site and prior to that wrote a blog for the entire Lost Experience that went on this past summer. The links to all of my blogs can be found in the side bar of this page. And I love that so many people from so many different places have contacted me concerning the blog. Heroes is, by far, the best program on TV right now. I just glad others are enjoying my blog. Keep posting guys!

I look at the stuff that Charlie said and that some of it was "not in the book".

As she explains that she remembers things well lately, she makes it clear that there are some thing she remembers that she would really rather forget.

Is it possible that "present" Hiro had taught her a little Japanese when he went back?

It's amusing to see that Hiro is embracing a bit more of a "secret" identity and being a little less naïve.

Going out on a limb... Peter Petrelli has also been having prophetic dream experiences. Does Iyer Sanjog (or someone with a similar talent) have anything to do with these? And what about Simone's father - was she really winding Peter up with the story about her father's dream, or did it actually happen.

The Alternative said...

The implications of what Hiro can learn when he goes "back in time" are endless. Learning English would be easier than say swordsmanship. It will be interesting to see what the creators do with it later on in the series.

Hey,

Just a heads up... I am 30 minutes directly to your North and have the same Cable TV provider. I didn't experience the same loss of conversion in the cafe that you describe, so I ws either your DVR, TIVO, your laptop, or the process that you use to transfer between media devices that caused the glitch.

When we heard that others did not have the problem we recorded the version re-played on the sci-fi channel onto DVR and the audio was complete. It may have been the signal in our local area only but we did get a chance to hear the entire conversation! Thanks.

Plus we recorded it on an HD channel and not the local affiliate. That may have something to do with it too...

Thankyou so much! I did exactly what you did to download and I'm stoked to get it an day earlier. Thanks!

What time does Heroes air in the US exactly? Australian EST is UTC +10, and US EST is -5, I think US West Coast is like PST -8... making us somewhere between 15 to 18 hours ahead, depending on the location in the US NBC uses.

This is the difference between getting to on Tuesday night or Wendesday morning! ;-)
