SEASON 1 : CHAPTER FIVE: “HIROS”

NBC Press Release

WHILE MATT FINDS MIND-READING GOOD FOR MARRIAGE, SEVERAL "HEROES" MUST FACE THE CONSEQUENCES OF TESTING THEIR UNIQUE ABILITIES OUT IN THE WORLD -- Confused after losing track of another block of time, Niki finds the police on her doorstep, searching for her fugitive husband D.L. Hawkins. Claire confesses to her father. Hiro and his friend get jumped by some Vegas high-rollers. Peter receives a life-changing message from an unlikely source. Meanwhile, Matt secretly uses his mind-reading ability to anticipate his wife's needs. Dismayed by recent events, Suresh makes plans to return to India to lay both his father's remains and his research to rest.

Re-cap of Episode Chapter 5: “Hiros”

The future Hiro meets Peter on the subway and tells him that he can only stay a short while otherwise he would risk a rift. Hiro instructs Peter to go back to Isaac and find out the location where they need to meet.

HRG and the Mysterious man have captured Nathan and are taking him to an undisclosed location. When Mrs. Bennet calls HRG to tell him of Claire’s accident Nathan escapes. When they chase him down he flies straight up into the air sub-sonically and then races away in a sonic burst.

Niki1 is found lying in bed and does NOT have the symbol on her back. Niki2 has completed the task and her debt is now erased. Niki1 cannot believe it but is shown the video as proof.

Peter cannot convince Mohinder to go back to Isaac’s to “Save the Cheerleader” but instead goes himself.

Hiro and Ando are thrown from a van into the outskirts of Las Vegas where they find the “Fly By Night” diner. After an argument Ando leaves and Hiro looking out the window sees Nathan Petrelli land in the parking lot of the diner.

In the meantime, Matt, using his newly homed ability makes a wonderful evening for his wife. Complete with porterhouse steaks, wine, music and romance.

Hiro tells Nathan that he too has special powers and tells him that he can bend time. He also tells him that New York explodes and that Nathan wins the election by a landslide.

HRG hears from Claire that Brody tried to rape her and that this isn’t the first time he’s done it. HRG has a polite talk with Brody, throttles him and then has the mysterious man wipe his entire mind free of memory.

Peter sets up Isaac’s paintings like the panels to a comic book and sees that an unfinished painting needs to be completed. Isaac wants money for drugs to finish it but Peter looks at the painting and determines that he can finish it himself. His eyes cloud over and he completes the painting. Claire, lying in a pool of blood, with her skull top missing and blood everywhere while the silhouette of a man looks over her body.

When Niki comes home a houseful of policeman are there waiting. They are very interested in D.L. as he has escaped custody. Niki asks for protection and the policemen get set to spring a trap. When someone comes in the back door the police et there trap only to catch Ando visiting Niki. He tells her that he thought she could help and that he found her information on “Whois” lookup. The police let Ando go.

Later, D.L. phases into Niki’s house.

Ando finds Hiro in the parking structure of the casino and asks him if they should try calling the painter again. When they do Peter answers the phone and tells them that he has a message for them…

Trivia

* In the opening monologue Mohinder says, “When a change comes, some species feel the urge to migrate. They call it zugunruhe. A pull of the soul to a far-off place. Following a scent in the wind, a star in the sky. The ancient message comes, calling the kindred to take flight and gather together. Only then can they hope to survive the cruel season to come.”

Nathan Petrelli

While its seems evident that both Nathan and Peter have the ability to fly, or in the case of Peter, at least levitate, it occurs to me that Nathan has more control since he has used his power longer, or known about it longer. He suppresses his power because he is concentrating on becoming a congressman and any weirdness surrounding him would cause his campaign to falter.

8) Nathan turns around and blackmails Ms. Sakamoto (Linderman’s secretary). He gets an additional 2 million dollars.

Peter Petrelli

Is it true that Peter can only fly when he is upset or angry? I think that he has yet to understand or practice his skill and that it may take a while before he can truly control his power. There is no doubt that Peter is an empath. Whether he can assimilate someone else’s power remains to be seen.

2) He works for Simone and Charles Deveaux.
3) Dreams of himself flying.

2) Cannot convince Mohinder to go back to Isaac’s.

Claire Bennett

Claire may be the most important of all the Heroes. On an altruistic level her power means more to the human race than any other. Immortality cannot be far away from rapid cellular regeneration once it is understood. The search for her birthparents may be a critical point to the story and don’t be surprised to find out that Claire has siblings (other than the brother shown). She may be someone that Sylar has his sights on to victimize. And don’t forget that Zach knows all about Claire’s extraordinary powers.

Claire’s “accidents”:

Episode 1
1) Two foot pole through the neck
2) Jumping from a high structure
2a) Dislocated shoulder
2b) Ribs sticking out through skin
3) Fingers caught in the garbage compactor

Graphic Novel 4: Aftermath (Claire)

2) Saves Brody from burning car / burned on arms
3) Explosion of car rips her back open
(How many chearleader uniforms does Claire own?)
4) Pulls glass shard from her thigh.

Episode 5
No "accidents" seen in this episode.

Mr. Bennett (Horn Rimmed Glasses or HRG) :
The actions of Mr. Bennet in the first four episodes do not lend well to determining if he is good or evil. In some instances he appears evil and sinister and in others he appears good. He has obvious affections for his adoptive daughter, Claire, but has captured Matt Parkman and directed the Mysterious Man to wipe his memory. He tries to take Nathan also but Nathan appears to escape (from preview of episode six.) There remains the possibility that he is researching and studying “Heroes” in an attempt to find Sylar. And he has an obvious link to Mr. Linderman. At this point, however, from the information given to us by the writers it is impossible to determine his allegiance.

One other thing that bothers me about Mr. Bennet… when he was in Suresh’s apartment looking over Chandra’s research his phone rang, which alerted Mohinder to his presence. Who was on the phone? Was it his superior? Or could it have been one of his “employees” calling for instructions? There is still a great deal of mystery surrounding this character.

Mr. Bennett (Claire’s “father”)

Episode 1
1) Seen in Mohinder Suresh’s father’s apartment after his death collecting research and data.
2) He gets into Mohinder’s cab in New York City. (Matrix reference: "…but I'm sure there are a lot of Suresh's where you're from, it's like Smith or Anderson." Smith and Anderson are the antagonist and protagonist in the Matrix.
3) Adoptive “Father” of Claire Bennett.

Episode 2
1) Mr. Bennett (HRG) may be Sylar but more information is needed to verify.
2) Mr. Bennett (HRG) has Zach’s tape of Claire’s “accidents.”
3) His allegiance has yet to be identified.

Episode 3
1) Points out Brody and asks if he is the quarterback (I think that Brody may be working for HRG)
2) In previews for episode four he is seen looking at Matt Parkman who is in a hospital bed / research facility.

Episode 4
1) Abducts and studies and has Matt Parkman’s memory erased.
2) With the help of the Mysterious man, HRG abducts Nathan.
3) HRG obviously knows Mr. Linderman (or has ties to Lindermam) as he has access to Nathan’s hotel room in the casino.

Episode 5
1) Captures but loses Nathan Petrelli.
2) Knows that Nathan can fly at sonic speeds.
3) Finds out from Claire that Brody attempted to rape her and other girls fro school.
4) Confronts Brody and has the Mysterious man wipe his mind.

Issac Mendez

Like Hiro, Isaac has seen a fragment of the future. He knows that the attack on New York, and perhaps the entire world, has to be stopped. As an artist, the most accessible medium to send out your message is through the mass production and distribution of your comic. So he decides to tell the story in the pages of 9thWonders! (Cool name for a comic, BTW) and decides to include his address inside the pages! Has Isaac begun his search for the Heroes? Perhaps he feels they will come to him if they know where he lives? Is a gathering of the Heroes eminent? Is this why Sylar killed Isaac? If so, then it would prove that Sylar is afraid of the combined powers of the Heroes. And that would mean—game on! And what role will Simone and her father play in the drama? They have been very quiet the past two episodes but I can’t shake the feeling that they will be crucially important in future episodes.

Isaac’s Bio (from the back page of the comic book):

Hiro Nakamura

Hiro has seen a glimpse of the future and he is very frightened. Now that he knows what will happen what will he do to prevent it? Obviously, our young programmer friend will not be able to convince anyone that the end of the world is near (whoever in T.V. does?) While a bit weak-kneed after the Isaac be-skulling (all right, you tell be what word to use here ‘cause it sure ain’t beheading!) Hiro will need to find a way to marshal his strength to help save the world. Ando will serve as his guide in America. This should be very interesting!

Mohinder Suresh

Mohinder is the narrator of the story and the catalyst behind the search for Patient Zero. In the end he may bring all the Heroes together to fight the evil (Sylar?) and its allies. The advantage that Mohinder has is his father’s book of answers and his research notes. The need to find out how his father died will be outweighed by his need to find Patient Zero and stop the villain (Sylar?) and his group. Eden may have been introduced as a love interest but Mohinder will need to keep an eye on her until she declares her allegiance.

Niki Sanders

Niki’s mirror double may be the most powerful of all the Heroes we have met. Does she need Niki to survive or would she continue to thrive in the mirror world even if Niki were dead? The implication is that Niki and her double are on the edge between what is right and wrong and that she/they could easily cross over at any time. The glimpses of her doppelganger that we have seen tell us that she is capable of great harm. And this isn’t the first time… Nike may also have feelings for Nathan Petrelli but we’ll have to wait to see if this relationship develops. We do find out that Nathan is a married man with two sons and that may have some bearing on the relationship.

D.L. Hawkins

Although not yet seen in any episode (1-4) D.L. Hawkins is important and has seen considerable discussion on the boards. Niki tells us in episode two that D.L. is on the run from the police but insider information tells us that he is in prison and has the ability to walk through walls. Could he be on the run after escaping from prison? That possibility exists. But why was he in prison? Could he have taken the fall for one of Niki’s earlier mirror-double murders? It is possible that D.L. could walk through walls and took the blame knowing he could escape at any time. But why did he wait until he was in prison? Couldn’t he have walked out of the jail cell prior to his trial just as easily? Perhaps his power is one that does not manifest itself until a trauma occurs?

From and NBC Press release October 5th, 2006:
"... a fugitive from justice (D.L. Hawkins) continues to baffle authorities who twice have been unable to contain him. "

Episode 4

Eden McKenzie

This character is shrouded in conjecture and rightly so. When Mohinder first meets her and introduces himself she fails to give him her name. She also tells him that his father shared his theories with her. But why would he do that? It does not seem to make sense to me that a genetics Professor working on a key to special powers would share that information with an antique bookstore employee. Even a lonely old professor would not share sensitive information. I think that she may be a mole or a plant that is destined to side with the Heroes.

Eden McKenzie:

Matt Parkman

His ability will prove to be vitally important should all the Heroes gather together. He will be the central processor, the listening post and the command center. He may be the one who ultimately makes all the connections between characters. Does he use his skills as a detective and thought-reader to dig too deep?

3) Talks a would-be thief from committing an armed robbery.
4) Hears an overload of voices which causes pain and confusion.

Sylar

(According to Mohinder Suresh, Paul E. Sylar is Patient Zero) Could Sylar be the result of genetic testing gone very wrong? Was he created by a covert scientific government organization? And whom does he work for? While his voice is similar to that of Mr. Bennett (HRG) I do not feel that they are one and the same person. It is obvious that Sylar is using his power for evil. His power may be the ability to assimilate others powers. His name is being associated with mass murder and that’s never good. There is no doubt that Chandra Suresh was working with Sylar but probably only as a means to uncover the identities of the Heroes. It is most likely that Sylar killed Professor Suresh and may even be responsible for following Mohinder.

Paul E. Sylar:

The Symbol

The symbol appears to be a shadow (or an eclipse) of the human DNA helix. The intersecting horizontal lines seem to be markers where the DNA has mutated. This is possibly the super-genome or a “new” or “mutated” protein that identifies the Heroes. It can be found in too many locations (see below) to be a mere coincidence. Is it a calling card to those with special powers? And will they rally around it?

Episode 1
1) Found on 9th Wonders! Comic book that Micah was reading (Uluru issue – upper left hand corner)

Episode 2
1) The symbol appears in Isaac’s apartment in at least twelve (and probably more) different paintings.
2) Found on a post-it note on Mohinder’s map in his father’s apartment.

8) Two instances on the cover of the 9th Wonders! Comic book (with Hiro on cover.) Found in the upper left hand corner of comic and in the background of the drawing in Times Square.
9) (Possible) Fousnd in background of Times Square when Hiro teleports to New York City.

2) Seen on the mysterious black man’s necklace (X’s 2). Once, when taking Nathan through the parking structure and once when confronting Brody in the hospital.

Brains:

There has been some discussion concerning mutated and/or manipulated DNA as the reason behind our Heroes powers. But why would someone go through the trouble of sawing the top of someone’s head off and scraping out the brains if it wasn’t important. I can’t think of a psychological reason why this might be done but for research purposes it makes sense. Einstein had his brain removed and studied after his death. Perhaps the powers we are seeing are not genetic manipulations at all but rather from evolution and the power of the brain. Why then the double helix symbol? Mohinder Suresh began the series with the question, “"People only use 10% of their brains, what if they used more?” Could this then be the real reason behind their powers? Have our Heroes somehow found a way to tap into additional brainpower? And, is Sylar being controlled by Mr. Bennett (HRG)? And the question that I keep asking myself, “What is Sylar’s power?” Could he assimilate others abilities?

Episode 1
No reference or images to brains found.

Great site! Some inaccuracies though for example;
"10) “Beam me up Scotty!” – Reference to Star Trek usually spoken by Captain Kirk to Engineer Scott."

- never spoken in any Star Trek episodes. Look it up.

ps: Love this show!!

You are absolutely correct - never spoken in an episode but connected to the show by association none-the-less.
